Turkish arquebuses in Istanbul
Title
Turkish arquebuses in Istanbul
Subject
warfare
Description
This photo shows a Turkish version of one of the first major firearms, the arquebus. A predecessor to the long rifle, it carried a smoothbore round not dissimilar to a musket-ball. Unlike the musket, however, the arquebus was a matchlock weapons, meaning that the operator had to light a fuse on the weapon for it to fire. The arquebus' capability to penetrate plate armor at close range helped bring the firearm to prevalence in the world of warfare, eventually leading to the development of new, more modern firearms.
